Survey: Mapping Ethical, Legal and Societal Issues in Disaster Management Innovation
How do EU-funded projects in disaster management address ethical, legal and societal concerns?
The DIREKTION project has launched a short survey to better understand how past and current projects navigate these issues when developing and deploying disaster-related technologies and services.
This initiative is part of DIREKTION’s broader mission to support the operational uptake of innovation in disaster resilience and to ensure that solutions are not only technically effective but also trusted, inclusive, and ethically sound.
The survey is open to:
- Coordinators and partners of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects in disaster risk management (DRM), civil protection, emergency response, and resilience
- Researchers, developers, practitioners and end-users involved in such projects
Why this matters:
Many innovative tools, from decision-support systems to wearable sensors and drones, raise important questions related to:
- Privacy and data protection
- Human oversight and autonomy
- Inclusiveness and accessibility
- Social acceptance and trust
- Legal interoperability in cross-border settings
Understanding how projects approach these dimensions can help identify best practices, common blind spots, and areas for guidance in future programming.
Survey responses will directly feed into:
- A synthesis report to be shared with EU institutions and the research community
- Updates to DIREKTION’s innovation uptake tools and screening criteria
- Public dissemination via CORDIS, Zenodo, and the CMINE platform
Multiple responses per project are welcome. Contributions are anonymous unless the respondent opts to be contacted for follow-up.
