Ms. Charlina Vitcheva, the deputy director of the Joint Research Centre, just launched the ATLAS of the human planet 2019 at the World Urban Forum (WUF10) in the United Arab Emirates.
The WUF10 is hosted by UN-Habitat and the Government of the UAE, and this is one of the largest gatherings in the world to tackle urban sustainability and many other topics impacting cities and urban areas. This year’s theme of the WUF is particularly special since it focuses on how to drive sustainable urbanization through culture and innovation.
The Atlas of the Human Planet 2019 provides key figures about urbanisation in 239 countries across the globe. This data and fact book is based on a harmonised definition to identify settlement classes across the globe. It is implemented with the GHSL Settlement Model that applies the European Degree of Urbanisation method to the globe.
